For Readet, navigating the ins and outs of college felt overwhelming at first. Fortunately, she had her New Futures advisor, Allie, by her side every step of the way.

“I had to work a little bit harder just to understand what was happening,” she recalls. “Allie helped me with so much — from selecting courses to sharing scholarship opportunities. She helped me feel prepared. I knew what to expect during that first semester because of her.”

For many Scholars, understanding the higher education system can be challenging, and their feedback consistently highlights the essential role of New Futures advisors. “Allie’s been a huge influence on guiding my decisions and helping me understand which path would get me closer to my goals,” Readet shared.

Even during the toughest moments, Allie showed up for her.

“I was really stressed about exams, and Allie surprised me on campus and made me take a walk with her to clear my mind. She never lets me forget to practice self-care. She’s been my partner in navigating tough moments.”

Readet graduated from the University of Maryland in 2022 with a BS in Nursing, passed her national certification exam, and began her career as a nurse — her dream since childhood. “This is a great first step for me in my career," she said after the first few weeks on the job. "It brings me so much satisfaction to be in a position to help other people. I plan to continue my education and eventually become a Nurse Practitioner.”
