Scholar Stories: Ghafoor

Ghafoor’s journey is a powerful example of how the New Futures Scholar Program helps turn determination into opportunity while inspiring a spirit of giving back.

From the very beginning, Ghafoor had a clear vision for his future. “We started from zero,” he recalls, describing a fresh chapter filled with hope, possibility, and the belief that hard work could open new doors. Determined to pursue engineering, he immediately set his sights on higher education.

“I didn’t know how to apply to college, so I had to borrow a friend’s computer to learn how to do it from YouTube,” he shares.

His persistence led him to Prince George’s Community College, where he began his studies in January 2023.

Becoming a New Futures Scholar in Spring 2023 was a turning point. “It felt awesome. It felt like hope. I was so happy because my plan was coming together.”

Ghafoor explains the impact of New Futures beautifully, “If you imagine you’re building a house, New Futures is part of the foundation that supports everything you’re building on top of it. The financial help, workshops, training... the advisors have been in our shoes before. I’ve used all of that to learn and grow.”

The Scholars Program has also provided him with a community that motivates him. “I’ve met other Scholars with stories that inspire me to keep pushing forward in pursuit of my dream.”

His ambitions reach far beyond personal success. Ghafoor dreams of working in cybersecurity at a federal agency and eventually creating a nonprofit organization to expand access to education for others. His desire to give back comes naturally. “My family taught me that when you have the chance to help others, you should take it.”

Today, Ghafoor is generous with his time. He helps peers with job applications, technology questions, and navigating the steps required to advance their education and careers.

Ghafoor’s story is a testament to the power of education, resilience, and community support. Through New Futures, he’s not only building his own future but also laying the groundwork to uplift others. As he puts it, “What I’m trying to show people is that community help is awesome. Helping others is the foundation for success.”
