New Futures creates educational opportunities for rewarding careers. Founded in 1999 from a bequest from the estate of Allen Gould (New Futures’ Founder Mike Gould’s late brother), we provide a practical yet innovative program of scholarships, career education services and support to low-income DC-area young people pursuing shorter-term post-secondary educational opportunities toward fulfilling careers.
Many of these young people would not be able to fulfill their dreams without our assistance. The youth selected to participate in our Scholars Program have overcome enormous obstacles to obtain their GED or high school diplomas and seek to obtain a post-secondary education toward a fulfilling and well-paying career. The young people we serve through our Career Education Program are equally motivated to learn about local, in-demand jobs and how to obtain them.
In just 15 years, New Futures has dramatically improved the lives of its Scholars and their families. To date, we have provided assistance to 375 young people (145 since 2012), amounting to $3.3 million in scholarships. About 70% of our Scholars have successfully completed their education programs, a remarkably high rate when compared with students from similar socioeconomic backgrounds. Our Scholars pursue careers in fields such as healthcare, education, auto mechanics, cosmetology, social work, computer technology and more. In addition, more than 1,500 young people have learned about local, in-demand careers through our Career Education Program, and we have reached thousands more through our Career Navigator.
