United Way Grant Received

New Futures has been chosen to receive a United Way Community Impact Award Grant of $12,866, payable in 2010 and 2011. As a very new member of the United Way, we were very excited to receive the award recognizing our work in the community. If you participate in the United Way National Capital Area campaign in your workplace, please consider donating to New Futures this fall (designation number 9367).

Spring Scholarships Awarded

New Futures is proud to announce the selection of 21 new scholarship award recipients. These scholars will be pursuing an array of programs, including a medical assistant certification and various computer certifications, 2-year associate’s degrees, and 4-year bachelor’s degrees. Junior League Recognizes New Futures

On April 28th, New Futures’ President, Michael Gould, proudly received one of only two $25,000 Junior League Targeted Grant Awards for 2010 in a ceremony held at the Junior League of Washington’s headquarters. In competition with approximately 45 non-profit organizations, New Futures’ work was recognized for filling a unique educational need in the community and for the impressive commitment of our board of directors.

The purpose of the grant is “to support the financial, mentoring, and educational guidance resources New Futures provides to help low-income youth obtain post-secondary education.” The Junior League of Washington believes this is important work that will make a significant difference in their focus area of literacy.

New Futures is honored to accept this award and is thankful to the Junior League for their ongoing support and commitment to the needs of our community.

Benefit Held April 16th

New Futures held its annual benefit, which was success on all levels. Attendees enjoyed having an opportunity to meet some New Futures scholars and hear their inspiring stories. They were also most generous, helping New Futures to raise funds to support more new scholars in 2010. To learn more about the event, and see photos, click here.

Interest in New Futures’ Message

New Futures founder and president Mike Gould was quoted in a USA Today article regarding options other than 4-year college for young people. In addition, New Futures was invited to present its “best practices,” in the area of exploring all types of post-secondary options, to the DC Double the Numbers Coalition.

New Scholar Workshop Held January 11th

As a part of its program to maximize the chances for success for all of its scholarship recipients, New Futures held an orientation workshop for its recent scholarship awardees. The group enjoyed getting to know each other as they learned about and discussed strategies for achieving at the post-secondary level. The 5 minute story discusses the New Futures program, our October Career Fair, the value of 2-year college programs, and President Obama’s encouragement for everyone to pursue at least 1 or 2 years of post-secondary education.
