As a part of its program to maximize the chances for success for all of its scholarship recipients, New Futures held an orientation workshop for its recent scholarship awardees. The group enjoyed getting to know each other as they learned about and discussed strategies for achieving at the post-secondary level. New Futures was recently featured on NPR’s Intern Edition web site. The 5 minute story discusses the New Futures program, our October Career Fair, the value of 2-year college programs, and President Obama’s encouragement for everyone to pursue at least 1 or 2 years of post-secondary education. Career Fair Held October 14th

New Futures hosted a Career Fair featuring promising careers that require less than a 4-year college degree. Representatives were on-site from the 4 local community colleges and a number of schools offering processional certification programs (allied health, culinary, computers, etc.). New Scholars Workshop Held

In an effort to help our scholars transition successfully to post-secondary education, New Futures held a workshop for its recent scholarship recipients. Topics covered included study skills, time management, utilizing campus resources, post-secondary education terminology, and how to use a syllabus. To see the scholars working together as they prepared for a educational terminology game of Jeopardy, click here.

New Futures is more than just a scholarship organization — we work hard to ensure that all of our scholars have the maximum chance for success in their post-secondary education.

Thanks go out to the Latin American Youth Center for the use of their facility and to Beyond Talent for presenting the fun and interactive workshop.

New Futures Celebrates Next Step Graduates

New Futures joined the Next Step Public Charter School graduation celebration to honor three of its recently selected scholars who were receiving their GED certificates. One will be pursuing additional ESL classes and the move on to a 2-year nursing program at Montgomery College, one will be pursuing computer certifications at ASM Education Center, and one will be pursuing science at Columbia Union College in Maryland. Scholarship Award Luncheon Held

The latest New Futures scholars received their awards at a celebratory luncheon on Saturday, May 30th at Buca di Beppo restaurant in Washington, DC. The scholars along with their parents, grandparents or mentors enjoyed lunch with the New Futures board members and our partner organization representatives. Each scholar was recognized and he or she spoke, sharing a little about themselves and their educational goals. To see the scholars enjoying their special day, click here.

Spring Scholars Selected

From a pool of excellent applicants, 19 new scholars were selected to receive New Futures scholarships this spring. They are pursuing a wide range of programs from professional certifications in auto mechanics and computer support to degrees in elementary education and electrical engineering. The new scholars will be honored at a celebratory luncheon on May 30th. Click here to see the selected scholars.
