Fall 2009 Scholarship Award Luncheon
Our 14 new scholarship recipients enjoyed a luncheon in their honor at Bucca di Beppo restaurant in Washington on Saturday, December 5th. Proud family members and mentors joined in to share their special day as they were officially recognized as New Futures Scholars.
All of these young people have overcome challenges in their lives to get to where they are today. We are very proud of their commitment and determination, and are honored to have them join the New Futures family.
The scholars proudly display their scholarship award certificates.
Erica poses with her mentor Margaret from Year Up. Their program helped Erica discover that she has an aptitude and a love for computers, which she plans to convert into a promising career.
Abu, a refugee from Somalia, was thrilled to receive a New Futures scholarship, and hopes to someday be able to support New Futures and help future scholars like himself.
Karla plans to use her scholarship to obtain an associate’s degree in mental health studies and someday become a social worker, so that she can help young people through challenges similar to the ones she faced.
Celia, a young mother herself, plans to use her scholarship to become a medical sonographer, helping others through their pregnancies.
We wish these scholars much luck as they pursue their goals, and will be holding a New Scholar Workshop in January to provide them with tips and advice for making a successful transition into post-secondary education.
