2011 Annual Benefit: A Smashing Success!
Thank you to all of our wonderful supporters for making this year’s Annual Benefit such a tremendous success! About 140 people attended our Benefit on April 15 that raised a record amount for New Futures. Twenty students came to the event and shared their stories with our guests, and our honored speaker, Byron Auguste, Director of McKinsey & Company, highlighted the importance of post-secondary education in preparing young people for the 21st century job market.

Harvard Study Reflects New Futures Mission
A recent Harvard study indicates that the US should place a greater emphasis on occupational instruction to provide multiple pathways to successful careers. The study suggests that the “one-size-fits-all” approach to education is outdated and that we should offer a more rigorous career-focused and real world learning experience to better define the clear routes from high school to certificate or college programs.

2010-2011 Career Guide Published
The latest edition of the New Futures Career Guide, featuring promising careers that don’t require four years of college, has been published. This guide provides information on over 25 careers which can be pursued with less than four years of schooling, and for each career includes information about the career itself, its educational and certification requirements, what the job environment is like, the job outlook for the future, some comments about income potential, and options for further career growth. In addition, it features schools in the area who offer each program, with contact information, Metro accessibility, web site information, schedules, costs, and any special requirements for admission. Each school featured in the guide has been visited by New Futures, to ensure that they are working to provide a quality educational program for students.
This newest edition of the guide has been updated with the latest school information, and has been expanded to include information about free preparatory programs, for those young people needing additional skills before pursuing the next step of their education, financial aid, and free educational opportunities.
In addition to providing the guide to our partner organizations and prospective New Futures scholars, the guide is being shared throughout the educational community and with the DC public school counselors so that others can benefit from this valuable resource.
New Futures wishes to thank the Junior League of Washington, whose generous grant made this year’s update, expansion, and distribution of the guide possible.
